10 Ways to Fight Anxiety
“A feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.”
Whatever the cause is of your anxiety, know that there are simple ways to get it under control.
1. Yoga and Meditation
Calming your spirit is one of the top ways to bring anxiety down. Find some beginning yoga videos on YouTube (start simple!), dim your lights, light some candles or incense, and put on some calming music. Even for just 15 minutes a day, you’ll start to notice a difference.
2. Go For a Walk
This is another great way to ease anxiety. Exercise is known to release endorphins which is a chemical in the brain that makes you happy and calm. Find a place to walk to (the park, the beach, etc) and get moving!
3. Listen to/Play Music
Whether you like classical or classic rock, music soothes the soul. Grab your headphones and turn on your favorite tunes or better yet, take up an instrument.
4. Write it Out
Not everyone calls themselves “a writer,” but if you have emotions and a pen and paper, you’re set. It can be journaling, free verse, poetry, or even a novel. If you feel like you can’t write, start out with something small like a gratitude list or a list of positive affirmations.
There’s a trick for the best kind of deep breathing that will instantly slow down your heart rate and you can do it anywhere. Breathe in for 5 seconds, hold the breath for 3 seconds, and release the breath for 7 seconds. Repeat as long as you need to.
6. Go For a Drive
There’s something therapeutic about getting behind the wheel and driving. It can be to a friend’s house, the mall, the park, or even driving around to a place you’ve never been before. Put on some music and explore some new places!
7. Take a Warm Shower/Bath
Grab some bath bombs and a portable speaker and relax. Dim the lights in your bathroom (if you can) and escape into the warm water and white noise.
8. Put Away the Phone
Designate 15 minutes every day to go technology-free. Without this distraction, you’ll be able to be alone and at ease with yourself.
9. Spend Time in Nature
Find a local park or hiking trail and spend the day exploring! You can take someone with you or go alone and enjoy the solitude. Don’t forget to take pictures!
10. Acknowledge Your Feelings
The best way to deal with anxiety is to realize that it’s okay to feel what you’re going through. The long you try to deny your anxiety, the longer it will take to ease it.
