Beautiful Lip Toppers – Glazing for the Lips!
Hi, makeup addicts!
I don’t know about you, but my makeup obsession has grown exponentially this year! There have been so many great products released and created that it’s near impossible to keep up! From beautiful eyeshadow palettes to endless lipsticks there’s so much to choose from, and now that we have entered a new season there’s even more exciting makeup to come!
What is a Lip Topper?
One of the creations that I have been loving is the lip topper! We all know what a lipstick is, we all know about lip glosses and we’ve even had liquid matte lipsticks but the lip topper is a new and growing trend! Lip toppers are basically a glaze for the lips – they can be worn on their own or over the top of other lip products and the results range from an intense glitter coating to a subtle shimmer to a multidimensional sheen! They come in many colours and textures and almost every brand now has some version of one!

Throughout 2017, I have been steadily collecting different lip toppers from different brands and I now have a lovely variety to pick from. So, it seemed only right that, as we approach the most festive sparkly time of the year, I did a review of some of my favourites!
7 of the best Lip Toppers
All of these lip toppers have something unique and special which makes them different from each other. They all look gorgeous worn alone but over other lip products, they transform your look completely in either an obvious or more subtle way.
Jouer’s Lip Topper in Tan Lines
Jouer is renowned for its lip toppers! It was the first brand I bought one from and I currently have 5 or 6 of them! What I love about the Jouer lip toppers is that they smell delicious, have a true colour payoff, don’t dry out the lips and have a light non-sticky texture. Tan Lines is a deep bronze shade with very fine gold glitter particles within it and it makes your lips shine like crazy! It is one of the densest lip toppers from Jouer too in that it fully coats the lips in the deep colour so it can be worn alone without being less intense!
MAC’s Mariah Carey collaboration Lip Glass in Dreamlover
Generally, I am not a huge MAC fan as I think there are better makeup brands to buy from now, BUT this particular collaboration with Mariah Carey did catch my eye! There were a number of lipsticks and lip glasses to choose from in the collection but I loved Dreamlover because the colour is so pretty and the result both alone and over lipsticks makes your lips look full and luscious! This lip topper is quite thick and slightly sticky with a non-descript but pleasant scent. It is still comfortable on the lips and contains silver glitter specks which catch the light really well! The light pink shade is not immediately noticeable on the lips – it just adds a hint of colour and sparkle!
Urban Decay’s Vice Special Effects Lip Top Coat in White Lie
When these were released by Urban Decay I was unbelievably excited! The selection of colours in this range is amazing and it has taken immense self-control not to buy all of them! I opted to buy White Lie because it is very different compared to my other lip toppers. The consistency is quite fluid but is almost like a putty and when applied to the lips it actually dries and sets. This means it doesn’t move, is dry to the touch and doesn’t need to be reapplied during the day! This particular colour leaves a stunning iridescent shimmery blue coat which can be built up to a full coat of colour. It doesn’t have a particular fragrance and because it sets in place it does slightly tighten the lips but it doesn’t dry them out and can be easily removed.
Bare Minerals’ Marvellous Moxie in Hypnotist
This is another unusual type of lip topper! you can see from the picture that it is a multifaceted colour which is truly hypnotic when you look at it! It has a lovely minty scent and the texture is similar to a normal lip gloss. It is slightly tacky to the touch and applies as a sheen rather than an intense colour. Becuase it is a sheer multicoloured topper it changes the look of any lip colour but only in the light, otherwise it just gives lips a great shine!
Elizabeth Arden’s Sunset Bronze Prismatic Lip Gloss in Midnight Kiss
Whilst this has been called a lip gloss I do think it is more suited to being a lip topper. The consistency is light and silky with fine pink glitter and a caramel type scent. It almost feels like a balm when applied and adds a reasonable amount of colour to the lips. The topper works really well over different pink shaded lipsticks by making the colour more intense and the lips plumper! It comes in 2 other colours which I also own!
Lime Crime’s Diamond Crusher Lip Topper in Trip
A post about lip toppers would never be complete without a review of Lime Crime’s Diamond Crushers! These toppers are on another level. There are numerous shades to choose from and each one is intense and glamorous. I have 3 of these so far but Trip is my favourite because the colour is gorgeous! The Diamond Crushers all have a lovely fresh fragrance, are non-sticky and although they are liquid based, they aren’t very fluid! The texture is similar to the Vice Special Effects Lip Top Coat and Trip dries once applied too but doesn’t quite set. It does deliver an immense shine and glitter effect and can also be built up to wear as a full cover lip coat. The Diamond Crushers are by far the most obvious lip toppers when applied and definitely for those of us that like to make a statement!
Stila’s Glitterati Lip Top Coat in Transcend
My final favourite is Stila’s Glitterati! Stila joined the lip topper trend quite late in the game but their two creations were very good. I chose this particular topper because it is completely different to all the others I have. This product separates in the vial so that you have the liquid and the pink-silver glitter at the bottom. To apply, you shake the container so everything mixes well and then apply! As it is in two parts, the finished combination is a very thin but intensely glittery fluid which applies smoothly and dries down into a semi-translucent layer of silver! It is not sticky, sets in place and you only need one swipe to get a good payoff. I find it works well in the centre of the lips rather than over the whole lip!
Before I finish, this post would obviously be incomplete without swatches! The picture does not do these products justice:
And there you have it! For me, lip toppers are one of the best products in makeup now and if you haven’t tried any yet, I strongly advise you do because they will add a new and fun dimension to your looks. Even if you’re not a magpie like I am there are much more natural and low-key lip toppers that will still make your lips look amazing so get testing before the full festive season hits us!
