Check Out Downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin
I lived in Wisconsin all my life, and for over 10 years, I lived in La Crosse. I visited La Crosse to check out the best places to go. There are a lot of wonderful parks, which I have great memories from and the food is a must-have. Here are some of the places I would recommend for tourists and residents, alike.
There are some wonderful shops to visit in downtown La Crosse. The buildings alone are beautiful to look at, and there are many other places such as jewelry stores, pottery shops, and clothing boutiques. I am a huge fan of shopping at small businesses, and it is wonderful to get the chance to do so. There is also the World’s Largest Six-Pack in the vicinity to look at.
The La Crosse Queen Boat Tour
If you want to check out the Mississippi River on a nice, hot day, this boat tour is the real deal. It is hosted on one of the paddle boats in La Crosse, and you get a two-hour tour of the beautiful river and its history. If you go with a group and sign up ahead of time, you can also get some of the buffets as the boat guides up the river. Last time I visited, we went up to the dam got to see part of the wildlife around the area. If time allows, go check out the boat tour on this classic paddle boat.
The Pearl Ice Cream is to die for! There is nothing better than getting some homemade ice cream, which tingles the senses. It is a wonderful, old-time feel as it is staged based on the 60’s, where ice cream shops were the socialites of the city. Not only is there ice cream, but there is also a nostalgic selection of candy—things I remember from my childhood. The Pearl also has a coffee shop for those who need a little pick-me-up.
Rudy’s Old Fashioned Drive-In Restaurant
When I lived in La Crosse, Rudy’s was my favorite place to go for my birthday. Only open during weather-permitting months, this place is a hit. You can eat right in the car as the waitresses will roller skate right to give you your order. You can always get a chilled A&W Root Beer to go along with your food. Who doesn’t love that?
If you like specialty pizzas, this place is for you. The exploratory buffet is a wonderful treat as you can get many different selections such as Seafood Pizza, Taco Pizza, Mac & Cheese Pizza, and many other wonderful entrée pizzas. You have a salad bar choice if you want to split up the wonderful buffet as well. Once you are done with your entrée pizzas, you have a wide variety of dessert pizzas to select from Apple Crisp, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Peach Cobbler and much more. So when you go, make sure you are hungry – you will have plenty of options to pick from.
The Rivoli is a special place downtown where you can go see the movies. Admittedly, it is not the newest movies coming out in theaters, but it will be the ones which are closer to being released onto DVD. But, the Rivoli is a wonderful place to go see the movies as you get to see the beauty of an old movie theater with a fantasy feel. They also serve dinner options like Pizza, to which you have tables to eat at right at your seat. Just before I moved, the Rivoli also added recliners to their theater, so you can go, sit back and relax as you watch the movie one last time in theaters.
These are just some of the perks of downtown La Crosse. Sitting right on the Mississippi River, this is one of the most beautiful places to check out. You surely do not want to miss!
