Fantasy Football For Beginners
Well, like it or not, football season is here! That means people are gearing up for another competitive fantasy football season. However, many of you are unsure of how this operates and why your friend obsesses over it. Have no fear! I am here to explain the basics so next time someone asks, you are not left in the dark.
Fantasy football is where you construct a football team using current active players for all 32 teams in the NFL. There are leagues out there that pit your team against others. Typically, you will find leagues are made up of 6,8,10, or 12 teams that play throughout the regular season. Some leagues are free while others compete for large cash prizes that are funded through league dues.
First you must begin with drafting a team. The positions filled on offense are the quarterback, running back, and tight end. These positions generally generate the most points and give you the best opportunity to win. Most leagues then pick a defense by team rather than individuals.
It is important to know which players you want before going into the draft. Each individual can bring a skill set to your team that boosts you to the top of your standings. Towards the end of the draft, you want to choose a kicker, which usually rounds out the draft.
Scoring fantasy football is difficult to explain in one paragraph, but here is the simple version. Points are scored on offense for rushing yards, receiving yards, passing yards, field goals, and potentially catches. On defense, points are scored for sacks, interceptions, fumbles, fumble recoveries, and points allowed.
Within this, there are several ways points can be scored and that is all dependent upon the leagues commissioner. As stated, I can provide you with a two-page document on the different ways scoring occurs, but this is for beginners.
During the season, you may drop or trade players to better your roster or fill needs that arise. Some leagues charge per trade while others do not. With drafting, there are different styles of drafting such as snake, auction, or live. Hopefully this clears up some questions and you can be ready to drop some knowledge on your next trip to the water cooler!
