Farewell To A Legend, An Icon And A True Rock And Roll Artist
Last Monday, the world lost an iconic man who was not only influential, but also very creative in his works of being a great musician. It takes a good amount of talent to be able to do what Petty did with his talents and even more talent to be able to connect to such a broad audience.
Luckily, I grew up in a household in which classic rock was continuously playing and over the years, Tom Petty became one of my most remembered and favorite musicians.
As children, my sisters and I would spend the summer outside swimming in a decent sized kiddy-pool that my parents put out each year. They would reside outside with us either doing yard work, cooking on the grill or just spending some quality time enjoying the sun. More often than not, our local classic rock station 100.7 the Bay was playing and Tom Petty always seemed to come on.
Somehow, through the years as we began to grow up, we would link those days spent out in the pool to Tom Petty and to this day certain songs of his are considered “pool songs”. These songs have a way of quickly averting us back to the days of spending time in that pool and creating a paramount feeling of nostalgia. It may sound a little silly, but it is something the three of us will always have an understanding of.
While Petty was supposedly “clinging on to life” for hours after going into cardiac arrest, he unfortunately could not hold on any longer and was pronounced dead at 8:40pm PST surrounded by his family, friends and fellow band members.
Days prior to his passing, Petty had wrapped up his world tour, in celebration of Heartbreakers 40th anniversary. This was what he had to say:
“It is grueling to do a very, very long one, he said. This was quite a long one. It’s sometimes physically hard. But then the lights go down, you hear the crowd and you’re all better. You feel ok, lets do this.”
Who would have thought that those would have been some of his final words we would be able to hear.
While the world mourns the devastating loss of an iconic legend, musicians pay tribute to the wonderful artist Petty was. He has influenced many and set the bar extremely high for true, classic music. While there are many, here are some of my favorite lyrics of Tom Petty’s.
“Life will beat you down, break your heart, steal your crown, so I started out, God knows where, I guess I’ll know, when I get there”.
“Can’t sell your soul for piece of mind”.
“And I’ll keep this world from dragging me down, I’ll stand my ground.”
“Well, she was an American girl raised on promises. She couldn’t help thinking there was a little more to life somewhere else”.
“You never slow down. you never grow old”.
“And I’m free fallin'”.
