I Am A Lion And We Are Celebrating 100
Where There Is A Lion, There Is A Need.
For the last day and a half, my family—three generations worth—came here to the Lions International Convention in Chicago, IL. This year marks the 100th year anniversary of Lions Club; Chicago was the start of it all. Melvin Jones envisioned a group serving the world, and Helen Keller asked us to be “Knights of the Blind”. He gave us a reason of being, and she gave us a purpose. Now, there are 50,000 Lions coming from all around the world to Chicago. We represent clubs from all around the world, where we help the blind, deaf and those disabled. This year, we expanded to helping those with Diabetes and Pediatric Cancer.
Here at the McCormick Place, in downtown Chicago, we 50,000 Lions join together to celebrate our purpose. I have been a member of Lions Club International since seventeen years old—seven years now. Even before then, I have been a part of Lions for many years, and I have never met better people. They are a dedicated bunch, ready to serve at any moment’s notice. I have learned this is my family; no matter who I run into, Lions are always there and for me. I feel more loved by these people, and I love them all the same.
Ask a Lion in your community about International Lions Club.
I wish more people would know what I know about this great organization. We are the best nonprofit organization I have ever served. There are many opportunities which lead me here. My grandparents joined first in the organization, then they wrangled my parents in. Now, my dad is the outgoing District Governor of MD 27 D 1, but he is going to continue in supporting the Lions of Wisconsin. My mom is becoming the LCIF District Coordinator as well as Family and Women’s activist in the Clubs. I personally have going to be a membership chair for my club and District PR Chair. Lions have many opportunities for serving your community, and there are many connections you can gain through International Lions Club. I highly recommend finding a club in your community and seeing more of this great organization.
