Beauty Subscription Boxes: June’s Birchbox – My Review
Hey there beauty lovers!
If you love beauty as much as I do, you will probably be aware of at least one, if not more, of the many beauty subscription boxes on the market.
One of the most well known subscription box services is provided by Birchbox. Birchbox has been around since 2010 and provides three different payment plans. The cheapest plan is £10 ($12.80) a month plus postage and packaging at £2.95 ($3.78) and this plan can be cancelled at any time. In each month’s box, you receive five beauty products tailored to your preferences, and you can either pick the design of the box or one of the items to be delivered in your box.
If you choose to subscribe, you also become a member of the Loyalty Programme. There are various benefits to the scheme including:
- 10% off products in that month’s box from the Birchbox shop
- a special birthday offer and
- early access to limited edition boxes.
Once you have subscribed for 6 months or more, you become a VIP member. However the benefits are largely the same except that the percentage discount increases to 15%.
I have ordered boxes from Birchbox sporadically but have not always been as happy with the beauty products as I would have liked. However I decided to order the June box, partly because you did not receive a box but a handy bag instead and also because I wanted to see if the beauty product selection had improved!
These are the beauty items I received:
- A MeechnMia brow liner
- An Arrow waterproof eyeliner
- An Amika Perk Up dry shampoo
- A Scrub Love coffee body scrub
- A Cowshed hand cream
Since receiving the bag I have tested everything a few times each. My thoughts on each item are below:
1. MeechnMia brow liner & Arrow waterproof eyeliner
This Brow liner is cruelty free and very easy to use. It is soft enough to blend into your natural eyebrow whilst still providing definition. Unfortunately the shade I was sent was slightly lighter than my natural eyebrow colour so I cannot use it alone but I am pleased with the quality and end result.
2. Arrow waterproof eyeliner
This eyeliner is vegan, cruelty free and paraben free. It is designed to brighten tired eyes. It can be used on the inner and outer corners of the eye and in the waterline. I have used it in all those ways and find it very effective in giving a wide eyed look and it did not pull the skin or irritate my eyes.
3. Amika dry shampoo
This is my second favourite item! I never used to use dry shampoo because I didn’t know whether it would damage my hair or leave a residue. However I decided to try it some months ago to avoid washing my hair too often and now use it regularly. This dry shampoo is excellent – it smells lovely and left my hair manageable and soft without any white residue or tacky texture. Within minutes it turns greasy roots into fresh looking hair again! I will definitely look to buy this!
4. A Scrub Love coffee body scrub
This is my favourite item! I love exfoliating products and this scrub is made from 100% natural ingredients. It is designed to be massaged into dry skin to stimulate circulation, buff away dead skin and hydrate all at the same time! It is very grainy and quite dry so if you don’t like pure heavy exfoliation you may not like using this but I loved it! I felt like I had really gotten rid of dead skin cells and my skin felt beautifully soft and smooth after use. It did leave a mess in my bathtub but that was a small price to pay!
5. Cowshed hand cream
I have always liked Cowshed products so I was really happy to receive this handcream. It smells gorgeous and refreshing and absorbs into my skin quickly and easily. My hands feel soft and moisturised after use without feeling greasy. The cream is designed to be used whenever your hands need a boost but it would be especially good in the colder months.
So, that’s my June Birchbox review! I really liked all the beauty products and the bag they came in is perfect as a makeup brush bag! The service has definitely improved since the last time I ordered from Birchbox and I will happily order future boxes! I am already considering which of this month’s products I want to buy from the shop!
