Met Gala 2k17
The Metropolitan Museum of Art held their annual Met Gala early last week, drawing most “A-listers” and “somebodies” to New York City to attend. The black-tie, fashion-based event is held yearly to raise money for the museum’s Costume Institute, and features a number of celebrities who are dressed to impress.
Every year, the prestigious event has a theme in which the attendees are encouraged to embody through their outfits. Last year’s theme, “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” displayed some interesting outfits, to say the least. Socialites Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner were spotted in Balmain dresses while singers Beyonce and Taylor Swift were showing off their creations from Givenchy and Louis Vuitton, respectively.
Nonetheless, attendees did not back down from this year’s theme, “Art of the In-Between” which honored Rei Kawakubo, designer of Comme des Garcons. Some memorable looks include Cara Delevigne’s metallic Chanel and Christian Louboutin combo, Rihanna’s daring Comme des Garcons dress and Katy Perry’s red Maison Margiela gown.
While everybody wants to be there, not just anyone can get in. Along with the admission prices alone starting at about $30,000, attendees may also be charged an additional $275,000 if they’re interested in purchasing a table at the event. With some celebrities making well over $1.5 million to sport designer outfits, the cost of attending is basically already covered.
This year, the Met Gala raised over $12 million, which is a little below the $13.5 million that was raised in 2016, according to Forbes. While this year’s theme brought in some memorable outfits, critics are definitely excited to see what will be the theme for next year’s Met Gala.
