The Modern Creative: The Millennial Generation
The creative mind can be a lonely one. It can be isolating to have a mind that thinks beyond the logic of the masses. I know how you feel. Sometimes, I feel misunderstood or like my brain is wired wrong or something. But there’s something that all of us creative thinkers must remember: This generation, the Millennials, are proven to thrive in the arts and in creative thinking.
There’s No Such Thing As THAT Kind Of Job…
Actually, more and more millennials are being hired into jobs that make use of their creative problem solving, planning and their ability to see past certain obstacles. These jobs can be as common as administrative work, assistant and secretary jobs, office jobs, etc. And our progress in these settings is what’s helping our generation gain a more respected reputation little by little.
Yes, there will always be the nay-sayers claiming that we’re lazy and entitled. But, they might only think that because they don’t understand how we’ve managed to harness all of this creativity and turn it into new jobs.
What are some of the jobs we’ve created?
Who ever imagined that making videos on YouTube or having your own podcast could actually be a career? It’s true that they’re some of the more difficult ones to make successful but, that doesn’t stop them from expanding day by day!
Yup! Writing for websites and public blogging sites has become a viable career for many who studied journalism, English lit., or creative writing. One of the great things about this career is how your work is evaluated by others.
You are not hired or allowed to write because of your credits or degrees. You are judged by your work itself, which is the most honest way to value your writers.
It’s true that animation and graphic design has been around for quite some time. But, with the constant improvements made daily in technology, there are more and more skills to be learned and mastered. Those with a passion for design and animation have more opportunities for exposure in today’s market.
“Is this the Age of the Artist?”
Some of the most amazing, unique, thought-provoking, and innovative works of art are emerging from those in this generation. With all of these amazing platforms at our fingertips, the ability to express one’s self is easier than ever!
The photography business has expanded far beyond school pictures, family portraits and terrible glamour shots. With sites like Instagram, Pinterest and Tumblr, amateur photographers can create and share their portfolio with people around the world so much more easily!
Take a look around at some modern photography pieces. You’ll be amazed by the vast range of topics and themes you’ll find. It seems that today’s world provides us with countless subjects for our work.
Welcome to the world of Tumblr. If you are an artist, an aspiring artist or looking for some inspirational art, go to Tumblr. There is an entire art subculture there that’s booming with a never-ending supply of new and upcoming self-made artists who are more than passionate about their work. Just like the photographer, the artist can use social media as a platform to catapult their work into new mediums and larger audiences.
Writers (Again)/Bloggers (Again)
Writers have already been mentioned once in this article. So, why should they get a second mention?
There are many types of writers. There are business writers. Data entry, documents, etc.
There are news writers: journalists with hard-hitting stories and interviews.
Then there are creative writers. They don’t write only because it’s their job (paid and/or unpaid). Writing is their muse. It’s what moves them. And they have a message and a voice that they wish to share with the world. Whether it’s to help sell products that they truly believe in, get behind an amazing cause, share some messages of hope with others, they are writing with a purpose that they find fulfilling.
Using blogging websites, website building platforms and social media, their words might just come to fruition.
The indie filmmaking industry has really come into it’s own in the twenty-ish years. With more world events to inspire us, with more personal struggles to learn from, with more heroes to honour, filmmakers have visions in their minds that they must translate to the screen. Works are displayed for all to see on platforms like Netflix, Vimeo, Amazon Video, etc. And with sites like Kickstarter, their imaginations have a better chance of coming to fruition.
“Creativity is the power to connect to the seemingly unconnected.” ~William Plomer
So many more jobs, careers and passions exist than were mentioned here today. Maybe there are so many that we’d never be able to count all of them. Could it be that the world will eventually recognize the importance of art and music in schools? Will we finally realize that there is more than one right way to think or act? Millennials have taken the initiative to create new job and new fields to explore and from which we can make a living. This is the generation of the self-made person.
So you’re a creative mind, huh? Still feel alone?
