No One Else Knows What They’re Doing Either
On the surface, it looks like many of us know what we’re doing and what we want out of life. But don’t be fooled – many of us are just coasting by, waiting to see where life takes us next.
Take me for example – I have no idea what I’m doing. I’m not sure where life is going to take me, or where exactly I want to take it. And there’s something to be said about those who do happen to have a firm grasp or idea of what they want to do, where they want to go, and how they’ll get there.
But as much as I’d like to believe I’m one of those people, I’m not. And I don’t think I’m alone. For many millennials like myself, we teeter this fine line between knowing what we’re doing and acting as if we do. I, and I’m sure many others, fall into the latter camp. Sure, some of us have a rough idea of what we want our next steps to be, but many of us are just waiting to see where life takes us in the long run. And that’s ok.
It’s ok to not know what you’re doing or what you want. Ricky Gervais hit the nail on the head when he said, “The greatest bit of advice I ever received was, ‘Don’t worry, no one else knows what they’re doing either.’”
Behold, fellow young adults, we are not alone in this awkward, in-between life stage. And it’s reassuring to know that other folks have been in this exact same position too.
What’s positive about being just a little unsure about what directions we’d like to take our lives in is that it lends itself to being open to endless opportunities. There a few responsibilities wedding us to a single place or lifestyle – our lives are as malleable as the Play-Doh my three-year-old nephew plays with.
As corny as it sounds, the world is literally at our fingertips. And just because we have no precise idea of what exactly it is that we’re doing or seeking, there are endless ways to go about finding out.
Make a list
This list doesn’t have to be of anything in particular. Make a list of activities you love, places you want to travel to, new things you’d like to try, goals you want to achieve – anything. Making a list may seem like the most mundane activity in the world, but it will ultimately help you gain a better idea of what you’re looking for or what you’re looking to do. Either way, jotting down a small list is a small step in the right direction.
Ask for advice
Let me be very clear about something – asking for help is not a sign of weakness. In fact, asking for advice or help in general can provide you with some excellent tips, tricks, and guidance to help you get going. Remember – you’re not the first and certainly not the last person to be in this position. Years from now you can share what you learned or what advice you were given with someone new.
It’s ok to be afraid
Like many aspects of life, it’s natural to be a little anxious or afraid of what’s coming next – especially if you’re not too sure exactly what that next step is. But you’ll never know what’s next if you don’t take that plunge into the unknown.
