Of Verona’s Time is Coming
Formed in 2010, Of Verona is a indie band that touches upon techno and rock music. With a flare for the dramatics with a sympathy and quite the colorful lyrics, it is easy to be involved in this type of music. It goes out of the norm for some, while for others, it is perfectly acceptable. Many people have compared the lead singer, Mandi Perkins, to Florence Welch from Florence + the Machine. The bad has been featured on MTV and on shows like Teen Wolf, Army Wives, The Vampire Diaries, Grimm, The Originals, Pretty Little Liars, Scream and Riverdale.
Their first album “The White Apple” was released in 2012, and it has been quite on the front when it comes to popularity. Next came “The White Apple: B-Sides” and their mixtape. In 2017, their second album came with Glass Beach. Yet there wasn’t much success.
Of Verona’s unique sound is surreal for some as it mixes the future with elements of the past, like in the song “Raining.” With its careful elements of piano, it mixes with undertones of electronic. With their headbanger of “Better With You,” which has been used in TV shows Finding Carter and Teen Wolf, it has techno music and a mysterious undertone, which makes it perfect for any teenage show.
Some traction has been gained with Of Verona, as their song “Paint the Pictures” was featured on the incredibly popular Riverdale series in many of its commercials. Going back to the roots of mystery and ominous sounds, it is perfect for a chilling moment and easy to listen to background music. “Dark in My Imagination” by Of Verona is another popular song for members in the teen show genre.
However Of Verona’s most popular song, “Castles” isn’t featured much on TV. This song, with a fast beat is easy to jump to and the chorus makes you want to sing along. It speaks about heartbreak but always coming back to your lover. If you think you know this song, it is time to think again. With the vocal electricity that runs through the song, it is hard to sit still. The song was made to sing into a hairbrush.
The slowed down version of “Castles” by Broken Unicorn enhances Mandi Perkins natural singing talents. The haunting message is brought forth with every word coming out crisp and clear. The piano adds a level of uncertainty as it goes from low to hide, just waiting for someone’s mind to be made up. Other instruments hover in the background during the chorus, but the verses lead her voice singularly.
Of Verona’s covers, which took place on their mixtape, have become popular through some the techno hidden messages. Taking up songs like Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” and Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” were big tasks, but creating a deeper and hidden meaning behind every cord, Mandi Perkins does it well. “Wish You Were Here” is slowed down while “Hurt” is mixed with the ever growing piano and buzzed of the background electronic.
With years off between their albums wasn’t a grace period as the group continuously works on the next album and the next hurdle. The popularity won’t come easily with them, but Of Verona is willing to put in the work and effort to make their album perfect before releasing it. Perhaps their music will not be mainstream, but to their fans, it is loved.
