An Open Letter To The Nice Guy I Can’t Love
You are more than just a nice guy, you are one of the greatest people I have ever met. We’ve been friends for quite awhile now, a relationship that has impacted my life. And, I suppose it goes without saying that there is no way we are meant to fall in love.
I really, really wanted us to work. You are everything that any woman could ever dream of. Smart, kind, funny. I’ve considered the possibility of us more than I am willing to share. But, I know that we will never be together.
We began as two strangers and built a friendship that I have cherished. I’m so lucky to have you in my life. I know there was a spark between us, but it can never become anything more. This cheap line may seem like an excuse, but we both know that “us” ends at a friendship. We will never be destined for each other.
I never used your or was dishonest with my intentions. I cared about you, and still care about you. Having you in my life is a blessing. You must find the person who is best for you. The person who is yours.
Hurting you terrifies me. You deserve someone who is just as intelligent, caring, and fun as you are. You are going to find a beautiful woman to build a life with. With every piece of my being, I know that you will find someone who will make you just as happy as you make her.
I can’t be that woman.
I am a believer that you know when you know. And, I’ve always known it was just this. We won’t be the next love story or the epitome of a Taylor Swift love song. We simply are us: two friends who let ourselves wonder and fell into a trap.
Our friendship will not become love.
If I’m being honest, I would do anything to become the woman you’re looking for. The woman who needs you in order to be her happiest self and can give you a lifetime of happiness. The woman you’ve waited your whole life to find. But, trying to take that woman’s place would only hurt both of us. I cannot take her place, and you cannot fill the hole of the man who’s heart is supposed to be mine. We both deserve better than settling.
You’re going to find that perfect girl to give you everything you’ve ever wanted. And, I can’t wait until you find her.
Until then, know I’m sorry and I’ll never forget the almost we had.
