Taylor Swift – Feminist Or Nah?
With the upcoming release of Taylor Swift’s new album “Reputation”, there is either a buzz of excitement or disgust. Either way, she is making money moves and moves for women. Some may view Swift as just another boy-crazy girl, but she is coming into a new role… the grown up Taylor Swift and proves she is sleek and knows what she wants, as well as she should, since she had a string of failed relationships under her belt. One thing’s for sure, the more scorned she is, the hotter her releases!
I digress. No matter her relationship status, Swift is a role model for girls and women alike. Not only does she go for what she wants, she can take those not-so-appealing moments and turn them into memorable experiences. We can all take a page from that book. How many times have you been faced with some sort of adversity and just wanted to crawl under a rock and be forgotten? How many times have you been faced with that same adversity, but pushed through and made your own path and said, “Screw it, life is full of oopsies. I’m just going to learn from it and move forward”?
Swift is an ideal feminist because she dates who she wants, she makes her own decisions in spite of the lime-light, she handled that Kanye/Beyonce moment like a boss and she is continuously evolving. That, my friends, is feminism at its finest. You take something from nothing, you grow strengths from weaknesses and you do whatever the HELL you want to do (as long as no one is being hurt in the interim). Take no crap, ladies, and engulf who you are. You are strong and soft, strong even during your weakest moments, and the weight of the world is carried on your shoulders.
Next time you feel like you couldn’t possibly move on or take another let down or regress anymore, look at the women around you, remember the women before you, and stay strong for the women after you. We make our own way just like Taylor, just like your grandmother, just like your best friend, just like that Facebook friend who struggles, and just like you!
