Terminally Ill Teen Makes Special Birthday Wish
For most young teens, turning 15 is an important milestone. For some cultures, it is the first step into becoming a young adult. While for others it means only 365 more days until they can finally receive their long-awaited driver’s license. For 14 year old Jacob Priestley, his special special wish for his 15th birthday is to receive 100,000 birthday cards.
Jacob was diagnosed with terminal Mitochondrial disease at a young age. This disease results from mitochondria failing to create energy cells in the body. In Jacob’s case, the disease has left him bedridden due to the depletion of all his energy cells. It has also given him a diverse set of symptoms including seizures, strokes, and severe developmental delays. Despite this devastating diagnosis, both Jacob and his family continue to remain positive every day.
Jacob turns 15 on August 28 and hopes he will not only reach his 100,000 birthday card goal but that this special request will also spread more awareness of Mitochondrial disease so maybe one day they can find a cure.
