This Amsterdam Hostel May Be The Future Of Economical Travel – At Least It Should Be.
Why not make your hostel experience as fun and ecofriendly as possible?!
Ecomama is a green and sustainable hostel in the heart of Amsterdam, the city of smiles and Heineken. It looks like Urban Outfitters threw up all over it, but the designs are mostly all completely recycled materials. For example, the front desk consists of stacked books to give a “desk” feel, and there is a whole wall decorated with old, stacked suitcases to give it some character. The headboard in our room was actually turquoise, decorative plates glued to the wall – how innovative! Our consumer culture has gotten so out of hand. People want the highest quality this and the most luxurious that, so this hostel is refreshing in the midst of this lust I’m sure we all have experienced.
They have a large room for the ultimate hang out with couches, swings that hang from the ceiling, a family style table, and a large teepee that tucked away in the corner, which is decked out with lights, pillows, and seating areas. I also noticed a sick vinyl collection for the music lovers of Ecomama and a large selection of board games to break the ice with a stranger or to enjoy with your best friends. Ecomama is all about the experience of travel and making you feel like you belong there. The second I walked into this place I felt so at home. There is a board with a list of group events for every week, like a free tour of the Red Light District! Also the staff is absolutely unbelievable! They have all the information you need from bike rentals and luggage storage to café recommendations.
The kitchen is family style, so you can use anything to cook what you want! They also have a little honesty bar, meaning if you take something from what they provide in fridge, put a Euro or so in the basket to compensate for their generosity of thinking of you and your cravings!! No, they don’t have free breakfast but they have a cute little café right inside the entrance called FILTER, which sells coffee and other fun treats. The man that works there is so cute and is always there to greet you before you venture off into the magic Amsterdam has to offer!!
The showers here have a mind of their own! They are designed to save as much water as possible, by controlling the temperature and 30 second use cycles. Our room even had rosemary grapefruit shampoo and conditioner that said, “Stop that water while using me” that you can find here.
The BEST part of this hotel is how much it gives back to the community. For every person staying at Ecomama, they donate 1 Euro of that to the Niños de Guatemala and Amsterdam’s Artis Zoo. Niños de Guatemala provides education to underprivileged kids in Guatemala, focusing in empowerment and entrepreneurship. Anika Jacobs, the creative minded genius behind the curtain, created this eco-friendly living space to assist in moving forward to a more sustainable life while traveling. This is her second hostel, the first being Cocomama, another hip place to stay in the heart of Amsterdam. Though I’m sure Cocomama is just as great, Anika has really stole my heart with Ecomama! Why doesn’t every business have something to give back? This blew me away when I learned the good Ecomama does, making it my favorite hostel thus far!
I’m so grateful for the people in the world like Anika who want to make a difference in sustainable traveling and living. If every hotel in the world donated one dollar to their favorite charity and used recycled decor, imagine how much that could benefit our beautiful Earth!!! Props to Anika and her growing company, I hope that others use her as an example so we can ALL progress to a simpler and more sustainable life! Let’s make the world happy! GO MAMA!!
