White Nationalism-Free Speech Or Hate Speech
By now everyone has seen the news of the white supremacist that held a march in Charlottesville. As one would predict they were met with large amount of push back by anti-fascists. Fights broke out, people were hurt, and a car was driving through a crowd killing and injuring others. This has lead to floods of social media posts from both sides, trying to justify their “group”. And of course you have the fence sitters, who believe we all have the Constitutional right of free speech.
The first amendment states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances”. So this raises the question is Neo-Nazi propaganda really protected by free speech? Their entire platform is breaking the first amendment for everyone else. They want to see a “White America”. They don’t want to see people of other faiths, colors, or opinions. They managed to get Donald Trump elected and have helped him attack the press (there’s the last part of the amendment crossed off the list).
I fully believe in the freedom of speech in this country, I think you should be allowed to voice your thoughts and concerns in a public form without fear of persecution. With that being said I do also believe that there are limits to where this freedom should go. If your speech is that of hate and oppression these are things I feel have no place in the modern world. Saying that the goal is to round up people based on their race, religion, sexual orientation, or just disagreeing with government should be a terrifying.
We have already seen their agenda coming to life with the travel ban this year. You are taking a group of people with no real proof that they have ties to a terrorist organization and banning them from coming to the U.S.; on the statue of liberty it says “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refused of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me; I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” This whole country was founded by immigrants and now we are barring people based on racist fear mongering propaganda. While yes there has been a huge amount of turmoil in the Middle East, and we are in the middle of it. We also have thousands of people fleeing war, murder, rape, and persecution.
Becoming complacent in racist extremism is a dangerous road to go down; being told that words shouldn’t hurt and shouldn’t make a difference is the wrong way of looking at the situation. The original Nazi party started out with small rallies; telling people who were poor, tired, and scared who was to blame for their problems. Then that party grew and grew until there was an entire world war because of it. So yes shutting down Nazi propaganda and rallies is important, and yes we do have freedom of speech in this country but no Neo-Nazi’s are not protected until that freedom. Hate speech is not free speech, plain and simple. Hate only brings more hate it’s an endless cycle.
The only way to stop this kind of thing from happening is to come together as a country. Being too lazy to stand up and say “No” is no excuse. Learn to care about each other, teach your children to care about each other and not to be so quick to judge people. We are here for such a short period of time, so why spend it being pissed off all of the time?
