Why Millennials 365?
“I always wondered why somebody doesn’t do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody.” -Lily Tomlin
When I was a kid and read about the Freedom Riders, Harvey Milk or Gloria Steinem I always imagined myself there. I imagined myself next to them, on the right side of history, fighting for the rights of people left behind by an outdated set of societal norms. I believed a textbook in a history class was as close as I’d ever get to creating social change. I thought all of America’s battles had been fought and won. I was wrong.
This is our time. Our country has come so far but we are not where we need to be yet. Millennials are by far the best prepared generation in American history to create social, economic and environmental change. We are the most charitable, most open-minded and now the largest generation in the US. We have the world at our fingertips, just by pulling out our phones we can become newscasters, photographers or event planners. Our ability to connect instantly with each other is an amazing gift but is also an immense responsibility which we should use to our advantage.
We created Millennials 365 to do our part in making our country and the world a better place. This journey began the night after the 2016 election, you know the night we all sat back and thought ‘What the hell just happened’? No, I’m not talking about the actual results (Trump beating Clinton) I’m talking about the absolute mayhem that broke out on every form of social media. Some people were experiencing the 5 stages of grief, others were celebrating, some realized that a move to Canada was actually really unrealistic and some committed hate crimes. I, like many, quickly realized America and the World needed to pull together to put our best foot forward.
We created Millennials 365 to give people an avenue to get involved in their community and combat the horrible news headlines across the country. We created Millennials 365 to give Millennials access to articles that covered social movements, lifestyle pieces, political candidates and policy that affects all of us. We created Millennials 365 to make it incredibly easy for people to give back, simply by sharing an article or viewing our site you are doing charitable work.
This site has two major goals, one is to give back and the other is to create an open dialogue. Giving back to the communities that raised us and organizations that we stand for will always be important to us which is why we have pledged 25% of the site’s profits to charity. Our second goal will be tougher to achieve, it relies heavily on our readers and writers getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. We believe in order to create positive change everyone’s voices need to be heard. We invite people with different views to share their stories on the site and let us walk in your shoes for just a brief moment. We invite our readers to get involved in causes that align with their personal beliefs and I promise we will do our best to continuously post events from all around the country to our calendar (check the events tab to see what’s happening this weekend). We invite you guys to start making connections, keep an open mind and form your own opinions. This is our time, let’s do it right.
