Why the Revenge Body Should be Abolished
You see it on the news in passing but the story is the same: a spurned woman who was once not in her best shape hits the gym then posts selfies of her “revenge body”. The praise and support from the masses rise to stroke the woman’s newfound self-esteem that is stemmed from her reclaimed good looks.
Doesn’t this bother anyone?
Well, it bothers me. I cringe when I see stories of the revenge body. It’s not because I don’t admire the woman’s tenacity to hit the gym and get healthy. I love it when people find an activity or purpose that revitalizes them. What bothers me is that all the focus during the painful reps of squats, lifts, miles, and drops of sweat is the man that left them. The end result is not to please yourself or to get healthy, but it was to get “hot” enough to make your man “regret” leaving you.
My question to anyone currently sculpting a revenge body is this. Why waste one more second of your life dwelling on someone who walked away? Why put any effort to pleasing them anymore? When you step into the gym or get your hair done for the first time in months, please, please– do it for yourself and not anyone else.
I’ve been where you are. I’ve been left behind and all I wanted to do was to make that guy regret leaving me. However, to make an entire quest out of reinventing myself to make him think twice felt incredibly foolish. Why? Because I’m reaching out for something that has long gone, and even if I am silly enough to reclaim him, he wasn’t good for me anyway. Why spent a lifetime of striving to be good enough for someone who obviously couldn’t see my worth? He had his chance- now it’s time to say sayonara!
Don’t chase anyone who’s walking out the door. Hold your head up high, and if you want to find solace, base it on yourself and not on how your offender will perceive you. I’m telling you this from the bottom of my heart– don’t give into the temptation of obtaining a revenge body.
Instead, be healthy. Rediscover yourself. Go and try new things. Travel. Reconnect with old friends. Make new ones. If fitness happens to be on this list, then that’s great! But for the sake of your entire future, don’t base any positive changes on this vain quest to see if he’ll notice your new hot body.
The boat has sailed away. It’s time to take the present into your hands.
It’s about time to abolish the revenge body.
