Words Change The World
Our society is one which values the role of words. We determine the credibility of people based on their ability to use language effectively. We criticize our political leaders on their inability to communicate eloquently. Our opinions of people change based on the way they use vocabulary to express themselves. We also shape our understanding of the individuals around us based on their ability to interpret and respond to words. Words matter. But, why?
Words power our world. Strung together, they create phrases and statements that mean something. They have the ability to make people feel. In fact, a simple statement has the power to make different people experience a variety of emotions. Understanding our connection to language helps us to use it to motivate individuals and make great change.
Words unify us. They empower us to find the strength in collaboration. Their use allows us to reach for bigger and better ideas. By sharing the thoughts we have, we are able to find the next big way to make something happen. We tend to see words and action as different ideas, but we cannot make a successful plan without utilizing our ability to communicate. The first part of the process stems from ideas and brainstorming. Language helps us to make meaning together.
Words define who we are. We use specific terms to let others know who we identify as. We support or resist specific movements based on the language we use or omit from our vocabulary. Slang plays a major role in defining our thoughts and beliefs. Furthermore, the way language evolves provides clues to the individual and their culture. The outcome is a beautiful, diverse group of people who each bring something unique to contribute.
The way we choose to interact with words changes the way we are a part of their impact within society. And you are a major part of the change.
Your words are your opportunities. What do you want the world to know? About yourself? Or, about your ideas? About the change you believe is necessary? The world refuses to stay the same, and it shouldn’t. Be a part of the forward movement. You have the skillset to be a valuable asset to your cause. Or, rather, you might be the missing link to the success of your organization.
Social media movements allow us to stay active in a passive way. There are benefits and consequences to the way we use words in modern society. Speeches allow for words to be utilized in making a statement. Articles are another way to share your voice. In addition, in-person conversations are a valuable tool to truly expressing yourself.
From everyday conversation to intentional outlets, the world provides us several opportunities to use language in a meaningful way. We can support the causes we hold dearly. Or, we can build relationships and connect with other people. We are the change the world needs. Find the strength in your use of language.
We are the words we choose to use. Select your tools wisely.
